Prior to the end of the 2016-2017 season there were forty-three (43) division 1 head coaches that were listed as 60 years old or older. So far, four (4) of them, Dave Loos (70, Austin Peay), Jerry Slocum (65, Youngstown State), Gary Waters (65, Cleveland State) and Steve Fisher (72, San Diego State) have all retired recently. Two (2) of the 43, Bob Williams (63, former head coach of UC Santa Barbara) and Kim Anderson (61, former head coach of Missouri) were let go by their teams at the end of the season.

There are currently thirty-nine (39) division 1 head coaches, still under contract, who are 60 years old and above. One of them, Donnie Marsh (61, Alabama A&M) was just recently hired by his team.

To be fair, there are many coaches who have coached well into their seventies because they love the game so much. Jim Boeheim (70, Syracuse), Cliff Ellis (71, Coastal Carolina) and Mike Krzyzewski (70, Duke) have all coached division 1 basketball for well of 40 years. But let’s face the facts, the wear-and- tear of the recruiting game will at some point take a toll on them, and although basketball fans around the world will hate to see them go, retirement for these three legendary coaches is inevitable.

With that said, here is a list of division 1 coaches, currently under contract, who are in the 60-plus club:
